Digital games and applications can be powerful tools to engage students and improve their critical thinking skills within both face-to-face and blended courses. These courseware applications also have tremendous potential to make education more effective, accessible, and affordable to community college students. This session will highlight some of the latest tools currently available to support student success within developmental and first-year English courses. Among these tools, several incorporate game-based learning modalities. According to the 2014-2019 Global Edugame Market Report published by Ambient Insight, the use of game-based courseware within higher education is projected to grow significantly over the next few years. Professor Goldberg will present a number of games that challenge students to review, practice, and demonstrate higher-order critical thinking skills.
