Why One Access Point Per Classroom is Wrong
Why One Access Point Per Classroom is Wrong During recent times, some wireless vendors have taken to approach to promote one access point per classroom as a wireless design to support 1:1 and Bring Your Own Device initiatives. Either mislead by aggressive marketing campaigns or the need to increase revenue, this proposal as a "one solution fits all" is plain wrong. If a proper design yields one AP per classroom, so the network will perform better than if you simply install one AP per classroom as your starting point. This session will address methods for proper design that will create wireless networks that simply "work".

Digital Games and Applications: Engage Students to Build Essential Writing Skills
Digital games and applications can be powerful tools to engage students and improve their critical thinking skills within both face-to-face and blended courses. These courseware applications also have tremendous potential to make education more effective, accessible, and affordable to community college students. This session will highlight some of the latest tools currently available to support student success within developmental and first-year English courses. Among these tools, several incorporate game-based learning modalities. According to the 2014-2019 Global Edugame Market Report published by Ambient Insight, the use of game-based courseware within higher education is projected to grow significantly over the next few years. Professor Goldberg will present a number of games that challenge students to review, practice, and demonstrate higher-order critical thinking skills.

Fill in gaps with adaptive software
Fill in gaps with adaptive software Every student has different skill gaps. Whether for intervention or enhancement it is ideal to have students focused on what they don’t know. In this session we will go over an adaptive software program for Language Arts and Math. MindPlay (language arts) and Ascend Math are two of the few intervention programs to provide a truly individualized study plan for each student. Both companies meet their students at their actual level of mastery – identifying skill gaps and tailoring instruction to focus on the most-needed content.

Ascend Math and MindPlay create a personalized prescriptive study plan for each student focused on individual need, whether that’s filling gaps quickly or building an accelerated course of study. In this way, teachers can address multiple levels of intervention within a single classroom and each student receives a rich, differentiated learning experience. Consequently, students are able to grow two or more grade levels in a semester or less.

Neither Ascend Math nor MindPlay are designed to take the place of a teacher, but rather to free up the teacher’s time to work one-on-one or in a small group setting. Conducting student data-talks and letting the students know what learning outcomes will come from using these programs is an important part of the curriculum.

We hope you will join us during the session.

CSM -- A New Approach to Personalized Learning
CSM -- A New Approach to Personalized Learning CSM is a self-paced online course that uses new personalized learning methods to not only teach math and literacy, but to simultaneously build student success skills and traits like problem-solving, the ability to learn independently, attention-to-detail, persistence, self-reliance, intrinsic motivation and aspects of self-efficacy. CSM accomplishes this by monitoring and responding to specific issues in these skills and traits.

In this talk, you will learn: CSM’s different and important real-world math and literacy skills, how CSM personalizes instruction across both skills and traits; the benefits of mastery-based over competency-based instruction; how to build student self-efficacy through educational technology; and the operational differences between teaching skills and transforming students. You will see a new approach to blended learning built on longer, more strategic interactions with students, driven by real-time student data presented in an innovative coaching interface. And you will learn how CSM implementation is flexible, inexpensive and easy, assisted with multiple ways to access free, meaningful professional development.

CSM addresses practical college- and career-readiness – having a “can-do” attitude supported by the skills and personal traits that are important for success in anything you do. CSM provides an authentic environment for students to practice their learning, and then partners with teachers to provide appropriate feedback (including a profusion of positive feedback). Note that the same CSM course that your students will take is also used by managers in large corporations.

This talk will be interesting to experts in educational technology, but requires no background in adaptive or blended learning. Extensive question-and-answer time will be provided.

MuseScore: A Subalius or Finale Want-to-be
MuseScore: A Subalius or Finale Want-to-be Sometimes in our classrooms we are so overloaded with pressures to teach Language Arts and Math that we fail to teach music. There just doesn't seem to be time for the arts in our schedule. Perhaps you do not feel qualified to teach music theory and composition. Any teacher can help students explore the mechanics of music by letting them explore and create sheet music using this powerful open source program. Students with no musical experience will discover what music notation is all about, and advanced music students will love this program because it give them an easy way to notate their musical compositions. The program is powerful and very complete. With a little time, any teacher could create accompaniments for songs they wish to sing in their classroom—even if they don't play a musical instrument. Sheet music can be printed or played, and yes, there is a method for entering scanned sheet music into the program although this process is not very trustworthy yet. Transpose your music, print out individual parts for instruments from your conductor's score. Export MP3 files of your music, or link to a MIDI device to enter or play your music. This is a great program at a perfect price—Free—for music exploration.

Utah's On Demand Ed-Tech Ecosystem
Which edtech works best for Utah’s students, educators and budget? This question guides the LearnTrials team -- led by Karl Rectanus, a former teacher and administrator -- to build the only research-based education technology management system designed by, with and for educators to differentiate products (across the largest 4,000+ library of edtech products), streamline procurement and help Utah districts analyze which edtech is best for their students and their budgets in moments, not months.

Since launching less than 18 months ago, the LearnTrials on-demand edtech ecosystem is already trusted by thousands of educators in 24 states (including Utah!), small/medium/Top 20 districts, statewide systems and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Effects of a Statewide Scale-up of Mathematics Education Technology
Effects of a Statewide Scale-up of Mathematics Education Technology Education technology can support mathematics teachers in effectively teaching many students with varying levels of mathematical skills and motivation in their classrooms. However, despite the recognized benefits, many teachers still do not use technology frequently for their teaching and struggle with successful integration of technology into their instruction. Through funding from the state legislature, over 200,000 K-12 students were given access to 11 mathematics educational technology products. We assessed student outcomes on the state SAGE assessment and surveyed teachers to understand the implementation successes and challenges. For several of the programs, students using the product at the recommended level showed greater proficiency on the state assessment than similar students in the state. In general, teachers were highly satisfied with the adaptive product features that provide individualized instruction and feedback as well as engage students. A majority of the teachers were not yet optimizing the value of these programs by using the real time monitoring data to inform their instruction. These findings have implications for work in schools and districts around personalized learning technology integration.

Math Fact Fluency -Without the Stress!
Math Fact Fluency -Without the Stress! Unfortunately, many students still spend too much time and brainpower on simple facts. Students who can automatically recall math facts are more capable problem solvers, learn new math skills more quickly, and are more likely to succeed in future math courses. Let us show you how using the allure of online, challenging, and exciting games can engage and allow students to master math facts more effectively than with traditional methods. This session will introduce educators to a program that provides customized instruction, motivating games, and assessments that will prepare students for the challenges of advanced mathematics---all while having students asking for more. See how automaticity with math facts is changing classrooms, test scores, even attitudes, and hear what teachers have to say about it.

SafeUT: Connecting Kids in Crisis
SafeUT: Connecting Kids in Crisis SafeUT is a new mobile app that connects Utah students in crisis with certified mental health professionals at the University Neuropsychiatric Institute (UNI) and sends safety tips to law enforcement or school officials. SafeUT is a confidential and anonymous, two-way communication via one-touch options to Call Crisisline, Chat Crisisline, or Submit a Tip. The services provided through the SafeUT app are available to students 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Introduced in January 2015 by Utah Attorney General Sean Reyes, Utah State Senator Daniel Thatcher and the Utah School Safety and Crisis Line Commission, the new SafeUT mobile app is designed to significantly reduce the number one cause of death in Utah children ages 10-17 – suicide. It also functions as a safety tip line for students to help stop crime.

The mobile app's Crisisline supports those facing relationship difficulties, depression/anxiety, loss and grief, school problems, drug and alcohol problems, self‐harm, suicide and any life challenge that is concerning an individual or someone they care about. This function is currently available to everyone who downloads the app.

The SafeUT app can be used to send a tip to let school officials and/or law enforcement know about harmful situations including: bullying, cyber bullying, threats, violence and gang activity. This new ability allows school officials to potentially diffuse a situation before it gets out of control and/or ends up as a tragic situation. School administrators and staff will be trained on this function to participate in the program.
